In a small street of Perpignan

During this year’s Visa pour l’Image Photojournalism festival in Perpignan (France), I took part in the ‘Low-Light Challenge’ workshop led by photojournalist Ziv Koren (Polaris Images). Participants were loaned a Canon EOS-1D X and a lens and set an overnight challenge to produce a story with three images. My story was selected as the favourite by a panel of experts and was awarded a special limited edition book – ’25 years of Visa pour l’Image’.

This image summarizes the story well. The night before the rugby game against Dragons Catalans, English Warrington Wolves fans, men in their majority, were celebrating outside an Irish Pub in one of the small streets of Perpignan. There was some shouting and loud laughter involved around midnight on a Friday, not something unfamiliar for the local people during the festival. An obviously annoyed girl and possibly under the influence of alcohol, started shouting at the English fans to stop and get back to where they came from. She was not a rugby fan and the argument was not related to the forthcoming game at all.
