Beautiful minds

One picture per month, 27 May 2015

This is a portrait of the four students I have been working with for the last couple of months. The Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design (Metropolitan University) commissioned me to mentor the students on documenting the facilities and workshops that best describe the University’s vibrant environment. They also assisted me during the production of the portraits of the Heads of Schools. The project’s result is a special book called “Session 14/15”, where their pictures and mine will be published alongside interviews, photographs, student’s work, archival material and much more.

It was a deliberate choice to work with Polaroid film for the portrait production as the creative team and myself felt that it adds a craftsmanship element to the book and translates well the University’s philosophy.

At the end of the students’ documentary assignments and the long days of assisting during the portrait sessions, I ran a workshop with them so that they get their own hands into analogue equipment and instant film. They all produced beautiful Polaroid photographs from this workshop, which they incorporated in their final project submissions this year. I was left with one Polaroid sheet loaded in the Mamiya. I used it to make this double exposure portrait of them - the creative minds of Ina, Deborah, Delfina and Michael with a promising future that lies ahead of them.

Opera and Photography Exhibition

The Bear - Opera and Photography Exhibition

“The Bear” is a one act Opera by William Walton based on a short play by Anton Chekhov.

In collaboration with Operaview, I am working on a new body of a photographic series that will be presented as a photographic exhibition and installation at the Proud Archivist in July. The series of pictures will create the environment of the new opera production “The Bear”, directed by the Artistic Director of Operaview, Natalie Katsou

The photographs aim to explore the personages mentioned in the original play by Anton Chekhov. It will be a series of portraits / study on the characters that the protagonists refer to.

In this context, I make portraits of people from the Russian community in London. The aim is to stage the photographs as little as possible and allow the people to portray themselves as they are with minimal intervention. Whilst putting together a photographic documentation of Russian people living in London, the pictures will have an autonomous function as portraits and pieces of the photographic art. The additional element I want to explore within this project is the dimension and the meaning these portraits will acquire as they embody a live musical performance. We will be watching these people both as parts of a gallery exhibition and as members of fiction.
